Balayage is a freehand hair colouring technique. The name of this timeless technique is French for “sweeping” and refers to the way the colour is applied to the hair – painted by hand rather than using foils or meche. Following the main principle of the balayage “Less is more”, this technique creates an incredibly natural and multi-tonal look, which blends the colours perfectly leaving no noticeable regrowth lines.

How is a balayage different from traditional hair colouring?

Balayage is a freehand hair colouring technique. The name of this timeless technique is French for “sweeping” and refers to the way the colour is applied to the hair – painted by hand rather than using foils or meche. Following the main principle of the balayage “Less is more”, this technique creates an incredibly natural and multi-tonal look, which blends the colours perfectly leaving no noticeable regrowth lines.

How is it applied?

As the balayage is a freehand technique, this means that no foils or meche are used to colour the hair but instead the hair strands are painted freely. Contrary to popular belief, a balayage doesn’t exclusively involve colouring just the hair tips. Instead, it can be applied to the full length of the hair, depending on the desired style and look. However, regardless of the colour or style, it is crucial that the colour is only applied to the surface of the hair as an over-saturating of the hair would lead to bleed marks… and trust us, that’s something you do not want!

Who can get a balayage?

The answer is easy: anyone! A balayage can be done with any hair style, colour and length, be it long, straight blonde, curly brunette or even short blue hair… you name it. Even grey hair will not prevent you from treating yourself to the beautiful experience that is a balayage.

Note: A balayage will not cover up the grey hair. Should that be your goal, then you can simply get your hair tinted first and get a balayage afterwards.

How do I know which colour will fit me?

If you know that you want to get a new colour but you’re not sure about the specifics, don’t worry – we’re here for you! Because a balayage offers so many possibilities, we always offer a free consultation beforehand. Taking all relevant factors like your overall style and even the colour of your favourite jewelry into consideration, we will then find your perfect colour together.

How long does it take?

This will greatly depend on the extent of the balayage. If you’re simply getting a few hair strains lightened up, you and fresh new hair might be leaving the salon after just 45 minutes. On the other hand, if you’re going for an extensive makeover, then you’re probably looking at a 2-3 hour session. But you can believe us that, either way, it will be worth your time!

How much maintenance does a balayage require?

Another big advantage of a balayage is the maintenance it requires – or rather the lack thereof. Since the colours are blended so subtly and naturally during a balayage, even when the hair grows out, there will be no regrowth lines or unnatural colour separations. This means that you will be able to let more time pass until your next appointment than after getting a traditional hair colouring treatment.

However, the frequency in which we recommend getting a top up depends on the colour of your hair.
For light colours (e.g. blonde): Your visits to the salon should not be more than 8-12 weeks apart, as you will want to have the light colour as close to the hair roots as possible.
For darker colours (e.g. brown): Depending on your personal preference, you can wait up to 4-6 months to get a top up on your colour.
